Gedichte ÜberKunst
PoemsOnArt

Echtes, präsentiert in echten Ausstellungen.

TO TOUCH: IN THE PRESENT AND ETERNALLY

Although Coronavirus gave rise to this poetry, it does not address the conditions created by the pandemic. Gallery owner, Ralf Lake, had asked for my support at the ceremonial opening of his Jubilee Exhibition at the beginning of 2021 – a virtual celebration, of course. He wanted some spoken texts to accompany a selection of works for the Gallery Blog. Naturally, I helped. But in a different way: poetic texts developed from images. Since childhood, my life has been interwoven with poetry and art; this became a book. The book is already present in its evolution. The completed texts of PoemsOnArt, read by the author, along with images of the works that inspired them, can be found on YouTube. Poetry and art have arrived in a new life. Together. Present.

READING AND MARVELLING

This is a book of PoemsOnArt, neither art illustrated by poems nor poems illustrated by art; this is poetry which presents itself unequivocally, poetry that can conjure up images and spark thought, that can awaken something meaningful. This poetry is independent of the image that inspired it. These poems will be presented in English translation also. Poetry translator is Petruscha Huber.

PROTOCOLS OF POETIC ENGAGEMENT

A new conversation between artists, exhibitors, curators and myself – a relationship cultivated at first through online video meetings, phone conversations, email, letter and package exchanges, as well as clandestine meetings in workshops, studios and galleries, necessitating social distancing, masks, and bottles of hand-sanitizer. Later in person.

Such conversations mesh and blend literature and art together; they ask the same questions of life. These are questions which I attempt to answer for literature through poems from art. Or I ask the questions.

The artists tell me about themselves and their artistic endeavours. I interrogate their work, visit their art, contemplate, look, read, speak, listen and so forth until my meditation enables the right art to come into being. Then the image or object becomes a poem.

Within my chosen verse form each piece has its own strict structure, although I draw on all the freedom that written language allows – rhythmic, musical, content or narrative. Art is something that may play with me and my writing as it wishes. Until the text says that it is complete.

The book of these poems alongside the photographs of the art that inspired and pre-existed them, gives a written form to each piece of visual art and celebrates it. The PoemsOnArt collected in this project will be presented as poems in their own right. Poetry as poetry from art and certainly also as a song for its own sake. Poems from favourite art.

The artists I approached engaged with me and allowed me to turn their work into poetry, no matter what the result was. They allowed me to use photographs of their work for my project. Our contract permitted me non-exclusive rights to use the photographs online in the developing project as well as, at a later stage, in the book. I would give them three copies of the book in exchange. This agreement is also valid when I have had the chance to take the photograph myself. Of course, artists clearly have the right to use the relevant YouTube clips for their own purposes.

To date, these meetings have given rise to PoemsOnArt from artists working in Chile, Germany, France, India, Austria, Poland, South Korea, Japan, Mexico and the USA: Ellen AkimotoAndoraUndine Bandelin (above an excerpt of a photo from her work „Das Bad“), Ariane Boss, FRIDA, Mansha Friedrich, Ha Haengeun, Camille Henrot, Endy Hupperich, Ajay LakheraAnne Nissen, Michael Ramsauer, Kerstin Schulz, Marina Schulze,  Deborah Sengl, Peter Sengl, three with Hironori Kawasaki, Namrata Sneha, Nina Rike Springer, Jörg SteinLech Twardowski, Sandra Vásquez de la HorraArmin Völckers and Christina Zurfluh. I found them in studios, in Galerie Lake, Oldenburg in the FORUM KUNST contemporary in Millstatt, in the gallery The Grass is Greener in Leipzig, in Lötzbeuren in the arbastrella – Biotope for Art and Poetry, in the Nationalmuseum Wrocław, in the Faculty of Fine Arts of the Maharaja Sayajirao University of Baroda, in Kestner Gesellschaft Hannover, in König Galerie Berlin London Seoul, in Galerie Falkenberg Hanover, in Mario Mauroner Contemporary Art Salzburg, in Hotel Altstadt Vienna and in Galerie Rothamel Erfurt & Frankfurt am Main.
